How to Get a Free Uber or Lyft Ride in 2026: 12 Ways That Actually Work

People search for a free Uber or Lyft ride for very different reasons. Some just signed up and want the welcome deal. Some have used the apps for years and want a code. And some are stuck with no money and need to get to a doctor, a job, or home.

This guide covers all three. Every offer below was checked on the provider's own page on September 19, 2026. We did not redeem the codes ourselves, and offers change often, so always confirm the discount shows on your price before you request the ride.

Can You Really Get a Free Uber or Lyft Ride?

Yes, but a fully free ride almost never comes from a code you find online. It comes from someone else paying: a card issuer, a health plan, a charity, a safety program, or your employer. Uber and Lyft themselves mostly give discounts, and mostly to new riders.

Pick the row that fits you and jump to that section. If you only want to pay less on a normal ride, comparing both apps helps more than any code: check the RideWise fare calculator before you book.

Uber First Ride Free: The New User Promo in 2026

Uber's official US promo page does not offer a free first ride. It offers 30% off your first ride, up to $8 off, with the code RIDEUBER2026FT (Uber promo page).

The terms are short:

• It works on one trip in the United States, on a personal profile.
• It expires 14 days after signup.
• It does not cover tolls, government fees, surcharges or tips.
• It cannot be combined with other offers.

The $8 cap means the discount stops growing once your ride costs about $27. On a $15 ride you save $4.50. On a $40 airport ride you save $8, not $12.

What about the code FIRSTUBERFREE2026?

This one is real in the sense that Uber posted it. Uber's official Facebook page shared "First ride free with code: FIRSTUBERFREE2026" on March 21, 2026 (Uber on Facebook). But Uber has not published its maximum value or end date, and the post describes it as a first-ride code. If it still works, the app will show the lower price before you request. If not, use the code from the promo page.

You only get to pick one. Uber says "you can apply a maximum of one new user code to your account before your first trip" (Uber Help). Students who have never taken an Uber have a third choice, which we cover in the Uber student discount guide.

Lyft First Ride Free? What the New Rider Code Really Gives You

Lyft's official promo page gives new US riders 50% off the first ride, up to $10 off, with the code riderdiscount1 (Lyft promo page). So a first Lyft ride is half price up to a $20 fare. It is not free.

Lyft's rules, in plain words:

• One ride only. Lyft says discounts "are valid for a single ride only," even if some value is left over.
• 14 days. The code expires 14 days after it is activated.
• A real phone number. Internet (VoIP) numbers cannot be used, and you need a valid US payment method.
• One code per signup. "Only one promo code can be applied at signup."

To add it, tap your profile, then Rewards, then Enter code, before you request your first ride. If Lyft shows an error, its help page is blunt: "your account isn't eligible for new user credits."

The "$50 Lyft credit" and "$100 Lyft promo code" are not what they sound like

Lyft does not list a $50 lump-sum credit anywhere. The richest new-rider codes in Lyft's own promo data are 50% off up to five rides, each capped at $10, so $50 is the ceiling. We found no "$100 Lyft promo code" on Lyft's official promo page.

Uber and Lyft Referral Codes: Do They Still Give Free Rides?

Sometimes, but much less than they used to.

Uber. Uber's help page says its refer-a-friend program "is limited time only" and open only to "a customer who received a program email" (Uber Help). Uber does not publish a reward amount. If you were invited, your code is under Free Rides in the app menu. The friend must be new to Uber and must add the code before a first trip.

Lyft. Lyft says "in select cities, you can refer your friends to Lyft and get coupons, credits, discounts, or other promotions" (Lyft Help). The reward is shown in the app and changes by market. The new rider must ride within 30 days of making the account.

Two honest warnings. First, a referral only helps a friend who is truly new. Second, Lyft's referral terms ban sending codes to "people you do not personally know" and posting them in bulk. That is why the code-swap forums are full of codes that do nothing.

Free Uber Ride Codes for Existing Users: What Is Real

If you already ride, here is the plain truth: there is no public code that works for everyone. Uber says so itself:

"Whenever you're eligible for a promo, Uber will let you know via SMS, email or push notification. If you received this promo from a friend, on the internet etc. your account may not be eligible for it." (Uber Help)

What existing riders actually get are targeted offers. Recent real examples:

• Uber sent some riders 50% off one ride, up to $12, around the 2026 Super Bowl, in select markets.
• A targeted Lyft code gave some Chase Southwest cardholders 50% off two rides, up to $15 each, in September 2026.
• One New York rider on Reddit showed an in-app offer of 25% off rides for about two weeks.

Three habits raise your odds:

1. Look before every ride. On Uber, check Wallet, then Promotions. On Lyft, check Rewards.
2. Turn on emails and push alerts from both apps. That is where offers arrive.
3. Keep both apps. Some riders say offers show up after they have not used an app for a while. Comparing both prices each time also saves money by itself. See the cheapest times to book.

Do not open new accounts to farm first-ride codes. Commenters on Reddit warn that after two or three new accounts, the phone and card get flagged and stop receiving promotions at all.

Uber One Free Trial and Lyft Pink: Free Membership, Not Free Rides

"Uber One free trial" is one of the biggest searches in this topic, so let us be clear about what it is. The trial makes the membership free. Your rides still cost money, just a little less.

Credit Cards That Give You Free Ride Credit Every Month

For people who already ride, this is the most reliable "free ride" there is. A few cards drop ride credit into your account every month.

These cards have annual fees, so do not get one just for rides. But if one is already in your wallet, link it today. Unused credit disappears every month. Airline and hotel tie-ins give points, not ride credit. Uber earns Delta SkyMiles and Marriott Bonvoy points. Lyft earns United miles, Hilton points and Alaska points. Note that the Delta and Lyft partnership ended on April 7, 2025.

How to Get a Free Ride With No Money

If you are broke and need to get somewhere important, skip the promo codes. These programs exist for you, and most riders have never heard of them.

Call 211 (Ride United)

Ride United is a United Way program run with Lyft since 2018. United Way says its partnership "enables 211 callers to request transportation to an essential location and receive a ride for free or discounted rate" (United Way). It has given more than 500,000 rides to over 125,000 people.

Dial 211 and tell the specialist where you need to go. Covered trips include food, work, school, housing, and medical visits. They first look for a local option, and if there is none they can send a Lyft. You do not need the app. It depends on local funding, so some areas have it and some do not. Central Iowa's program, for example, ended in April 2026.

Rides to the doctor: Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and the VA

• Medicaid covers rides to medical care for members who have no other way to get there. Call the member number on your card and ask for "non-emergency medical transportation." The plan's ride company often sends an Uber or Lyft. Book a day or more ahead.
• Medicare Advantage plans sometimes include rides. It is less common than it was: KFF found 22% of enrollees are in plans with a transportation benefit in 2026, down from 28% in 2025 (KFF). Original Medicare does not cover routine rides.
• Veterans can ask the local VA travel office about Uber Health rides to VA appointments. VA staff book the ride, and you do not need the app.

Since March 2026, some healthcare organizations can let the people they serve book their own covered Uber rides in the app, with no credit card needed (Uber). The organization has to invite you by text first. If you are in a hospital, ask for the social worker. They often have ride vouchers.

Rides to a job interview or a new job

Lyft Jobs Access offers "free Lyft car rides to and from job training programs, interviews, and the first three weeks of new employment." This is where the rumor about "3 weeks of free Lyft rides" comes from. It is real, but it is not in the app. United Way and Goodwill run it locally, in 38 states and Washington, DC, for people who qualify. Apply with the form on Lyft's Jobs Access page.

Can you take an Uber with no money and pay later?

No. If your card is declined, Uber says "you won't be able to request a trip until you update your payment method." If a charge fails after the ride, it becomes an unpaid balance, and gift cards or credits cannot clear it. The old trick of riding with $1 on a card just locks your account and can trigger a bank overdraft fee.

Neither app has its own pay-later plan. Uber does list Klarna, PayPal and Venmo as payment methods, and in some cities verified riders can pay cash. See every way to pay for an Uber. Lyft does not take cash in the car, but you can load Lyft Cash with cash at some stores, with a $30 minimum.

Free Rides Home on Holidays: Safe-Ride Programs

Many people searching for "free Uber codes" on New Year's Eve are really looking for these. Cities, safety groups and even law firms pay for rides home so people do not drive drunk. The codes are local and short-lived, and they run out.

How to find one near you: a day or two before the holiday, search your city or state name plus "safe ride home." Check your state highway safety office and local news. Some local law firms also pay back a ride home on big holidays. One Virginia firm covered up to $25 on New Year's Eve.

Two things people get wrong. The rides are paid for by sponsors, not by Uber or Lyft. And Uber's 2026 partnership with MADD is awareness only, with no codes. More options are in our safe ride home guide and the New Year's Eve ride guide.

Discounted Rides to Vote, and Free Rides in Disasters

Election Day, November 3, 2026. Lyft's code VOTE26 gives "a 50% discount, or up to $10, on a ride to their polling place" (Fast Company, September 2026). Add it before Election Day. Uber gave the same deal in 2024, 50% off up to $10 through a "Go Vote" button in the app (Uber). As of September 19, 2026, Uber had not announced a 2026 offer, so check the app in late October.

Disasters. When officials order an evacuation, both companies often pay for rides to shelters. During the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, Uber covered rides up to $40 and Lyft covered two rides up to $25 each. In May 2026, Uber gave Orange County residents two free rides up to $40 each to shelters during a chemical leak. These codes only work in the affected area. Look for them on the companies' social accounts and your state emergency agency's page.

Rides Paid For by Your Job, School or Commute Program

• Uber vouchers and Lyft Pass. Companies use these to pay for rides for staff, customers and event guests. You get a link, a code or an email. On Lyft, add it under Payment, then Add Lyft Pass. They usually limit the place, date and time, and anything over the limit is charged to your card.
• Guaranteed Ride Home. If you get to work by bus, train, carpool, bike or on foot, your region may pay for an emergency ride home. In the DC area, Commuter Connections covers up to 6 emergency rides home a year by taxi, Uber or Lyft, and you pay only the tip. 511 Contra Costa pays back up to 6 trips a year. King County Metro covers up to 8 rides a year, up to $200 each, through employers. Sign up before you need it. Search your metro area plus "guaranteed ride home."
• Campus programs. Many colleges pay for late-night rides inside a set zone. Ask your transportation office.

One thing that does not work: pre-tax commuter benefits. The 2026 limit is $340 a month, but it covers transit passes and vanpools, not a normal UberX or Lyft ride.

Gift Cards and Rewards Sites: The Slow Way

The "free $25 Uber gift card" is real only if you earn it. Swagbucks lists a $25 Uber gift code for 2,500 points, and 100 points are worth $1 (Swagbucks). That is a lot of surveys for one ride. Anyone offering a free gift card in exchange for a login, a verification code or a "small fee" is running a scam.

A gift from family is the easier route. Uber gift cards do not expire, though Uber still requires a valid card on file for the balance to work. Lyft lets relatives attach a gift card when they invite an older adult to Lyft Silver, its simpler mode for seniors. Silver itself is free to use, but rides cost the same as regular Lyft. Fake Free Ride Codes: How to Spot Them

Search for free ride codes and you will land on junk fast. Here is what to skip:

• Facebook groups that promise $100 codes for existing users. Neither company lists such a code. The groups exist to collect clicks and members.
• People selling "50% off rides" on Telegram or Cash App. These rides are often booked with stolen accounts or cards. You can lose your money and your own account.
• Anyone asking for your verification code. Scammers have phoned riders while posing as Uber support and asked for the code sent by text. Uber says its employees "will never contact you via email or phone requesting your account information, including your password."
• Coupon sites listing "60% off for existing users." These are unverified. If a code is real for your account, the lower price shows before you request.

The safe rule is simple. Real offers come from five places: the official promo pages, the promotions tab inside the app, your card issuer, a named local program, or your employer, school or health plan.

What to Do Right Now: A Quick Checklist

• Never used Uber or Lyft? Use the official new-rider code on each app, one per app, and ride within 14 days. Put your most expensive planned ride on Lyft, since its cap is higher at $10.
• Already a rider? Link any Amex, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Mastercard or Bilt card you hold. Check the promotions tab before each ride. Compare both apps on the fare calculator.
• A student? Look at the 12-month Uber One for Students trial before October 21, 2026, and ask about campus rides.
• No money and an essential trip? Call 211. For medical trips, call your health plan. For a new job, apply to Lyft Jobs Access.
• Going out on a holiday? Search your city plus "safe ride home" before you leave.
• Voting on November 3? Add Lyft code VOTE26 ahead of time.
