What Affects Your Ride Cost?

Distance

The biggest cost driver. Uber charges $0.90–$1.60 per mile for UberX, Lyft charges similar rates.

Time

Per-minute charges of $0.20–$0.35/min add up in heavy traffic. A 30-min ride in traffic costs more than a 15-min ride covering the same distance.

Ride type

UberX and Lyft are the cheapest. Comfort/Lux add 20–40%, XL adds 40–60%, and Black/Lux Black can cost 2–3x more.

Surge pricing

When demand exceeds supply, prices spike 1.5–3x. Common during rush hours, bad weather, concerts, and holidays.

City & region

New York and San Francisco are the most expensive markets. Southern and Midwestern cities are typically 20–30% cheaper.

Fees & surcharges

Booking fees ($1.85–$2.75), airport surcharges ($2–$6), and tolls are added on top of the base fare calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the rideshare cost calculator work?

Enter your pickup and drop-off locations. Our calculator uses real-time rate data from Uber, Lyft, and local taxi services across 300+ US cities to estimate fares for every available ride type — UberX, Uber Comfort, UberXL, Uber Black, Lyft, Lyft XL, and metered taxis.

Is this rideshare calculator free?

Yes, completely free. No account, no sign-up, no app download required. Just enter your route and compare prices instantly.

How accurate are the fare estimates?

Our estimates are based on current base fares, per-mile rates, per-minute rates, and booking fees for each service. They are typically within 10–15% of the final fare. Actual prices may differ due to real-time surge/demand pricing, traffic conditions, route changes, and tolls.

Does the calculator account for surge pricing?

Our base estimates show non-surge pricing. When surge pricing is active, actual fares can be 1.5–3x higher. We recommend comparing both Uber and Lyft, as surge events often affect one app more than the other.

Can I compare airport ride costs?

Yes. Enter any airport code (LAX, JFK, ORD, etc.) as your pickup or drop-off. Our calculator includes airport surcharges ($2–$6) in the estimate. You can also browse our dedicated airport pages for common route prices.

What cities does this calculator cover?

RideWise covers 300+ US cities across all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. This includes every major metro area and most mid-sized cities where Uber and Lyft operate.
