Can You Take a Robotaxi to the Airport? Every US Airport With Waymo, Tesla & Zoox Access (2026)

Short answer: at four US airports, yes. As of July 25, 2026, a driverless car will pick you up at Phoenix Sky Harbor, San Jose Mineta, San Francisco International and San Antonio International — all Waymo. Everywhere else, including LAX, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin, the robotaxi that just drove you across town cannot legally touch airport property.

That is the whole list. Tesla operates driverless cars in seven metros and holds zero autonomous airport authorizations. Zoox is testing at Las Vegas with employees on board only. Below is the full airport-by-airport table, what actually happens at each curb, why LAX is the great holdout, what a robotaxi airport ride costs against a normal Uber to the airport, and a dated pipeline of what opens next. What Actually Happens at Each Curb

The status table gets you 80% of the way. The other 20% is the curb-level detail that decides whether you make your flight.

Phoenix Sky Harbor — the one that just works

Sky Harbor is the reference implementation. Waymo has run airport trips here since 2022 via the Sky Train stations, added curbside pickup at Terminals 3 and 4 in December 2023, and went to 24/7 curb service in August 2024. Pickups and drop-offs are on Level 1, outer curb, South Door 8 near arrivals — the same rideshare island Uber and Lyft use, which means the same signage and the same walk.

One local trick that survives the robotaxi era: the free PHX Sky Train runs 24 hours to the 44th Street and 24th Street stations, both of which have designated rideshare pickup and both of which Waymo serves. Riding the Sky Train out of the terminal and requesting from 44th Street can dodge a congested Terminal 4 curb entirely. San Jose Mineta — curbside at A, rental center at B

SJC became the first California airport with commercial robotaxi service in late 2025, and it is genuinely convenient — with an asterisk. Terminal A pickups are at Stop 9 on the regular ground transportation island. Terminal B pickups are outside the Rental Car Center, which is a short walk or shuttle from the terminal. Drop-offs for both terminals are curbside at departures, so the outbound leg is the easy one.

SFO — the one everybody gets wrong

Waymo opened SFO to public riders on January 29, 2026, and the headlines said "Waymo now serves SFO." What that means in practice: your pickup is at the Rental Car Center (about a 15-minute AirTrain ride from the terminals) or outside the Grand Hyatt at SFO (about 10 minutes). There is no terminal curb access, and Waymo is still throttling how many riders get the option.

Add it up before you book: AirTrain wait plus ride plus the walk to the pickup zone is realistically 20-25 minutes on top of your fare. If you are arriving with checked bags and a schedule, the departures-level Uber and Lyft pickup at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 is still faster — SFO is one of the few airports where rideshare pickup is on the upper level, a detail first-time visitors miss constantly. San Antonio — quietly the best one

SAT went live on March 31, 2026 as Waymo's fourth airport and, curiously, got the cleanest deal of the four: curbside at Terminal A and Terminal B departures, plus the arrivals outer curb near Rideshare Zone 2, 24 hours a day, with no rider waitlist. Anyone who can ride a Waymo in San Antonio can ride one to the airport. It is the only airport in the country where the robotaxi experience is strictly equivalent to the Uber experience.

Why Can't I Take a Waymo to LAX?

This is the single most searched robotaxi airport question, and the honest answer is unsatisfying: Los Angeles World Airports has not authorized autonomous pickups or drop-offs at LAX, and no timeline has been published. Waymo's Los Angeles service area is large — it reaches Santa Monica, Venice, Westchester and the neighborhoods that ring the airport — but LAX itself is carved out, and Waymo's own LA page says the airport is not served.

Airport access is not a technology problem; it is a permit-and-revenue problem. Airports run ground transportation as a business: SFO alone collected $51.7 million in trip fees from 9.4 million rideshare pickups and drop-offs in fiscal 2024. Every operator that touches the curb needs a negotiated agreement covering fees, insurance, staging, incident response and who is accountable when a vehicle blocks a lane. That takes a board vote, not a software update — which is why the airports that said yes first (Phoenix, San Jose, San Antonio) are mid-size airports with room to experiment, and the megahubs are last.

The workaround riders actually use: ride a Waymo to the airport's edge — a Century Boulevard hotel or Westchester — and cover the last mile with a short Uber, Lyft, or hotel shuttle. It usually costs more in total than just booking one Uber, so treat it as a novelty rather than a strategy. The Austin Confusion: Two Operators, Neither Fully Cleared

Austin generates more contradictory robotaxi airport claims than any other city, so here is the state of play as of July 25, 2026.

Waymo: serves Austin only through the Uber app, inside a roughly 130-square-mile service area. Any trip that starts or ends outside that area — including airport trips — will not match with a Waymo; you get a human-driven UberX instead. Austin-Bergstrom has granted Waymo a testing permit only, with a human behind the wheel, and has not authorized revenue rides.

Tesla: expanded its unsupervised robotaxi zone on June 3, 2026 to cover the entire Austin metro — roughly 245 square miles, explicitly including routes to Austin-Bergstrom. Riders report being able to request airport trips. But Tesla holds no autonomous airport agreement, its truly driverless fleet is reportedly around 20 vehicles, and coverage on a map is not the same as an authorized commercial pickup at the curb. Verify in the app on the day, and have a backup.

One more wrinkle worth watching: Uber and Waymo announced on July 24, 2026 that they will end their exclusivity arrangement in Austin and Atlanta. If Waymo eventually dispatches through its own app in those cities, the airport question gets renegotiated along with everything else.

Does a Robotaxi Actually Cost Less to the Airport?

No — not on sticker price, and not on the routes where robotaxis are currently allowed. Airport runs at the four live airports are short-to-medium trips, which is exactly where Waymo's pricing is least competitive, because its higher base fare gets spread over fewer miles.

UberX, Lyft and taxi figures computed from the RideWise canonical rate cards (the same rate data behind every city and airport page), off-peak, and include the airport pickup fee where we publish one: $4.00 at PHX and $5.50 at SFO. Surge, tolls and time of day move all of these.

Two things flip the math, though, and both matter at airports:

• You never tip a Waymo. Add the 15-20% most riders tip a driver and the PHX-to-Scottsdale run goes from $33.20 vs $22.40 to $33.20 vs about $25.76 — and on longer trips the two cross over entirely.
• Airport fees are identical. The $4.00 at PHX or $5.50 at SFO is charged to every commercial operator, so the fee never changes which option is cheaper. It just makes short airport hops look expensive across the board — at Sky Harbor, roughly $6 of a $15 downtown fare is fixed fees rather than distance.

Tesla and Zoox: Read the Fine Print

Two operators generate airport headlines that do not survive contact with the permit paperwork.

Tesla at SFO is not a robotaxi. Tesla advertises ride-hailing to and from San Francisco International, but it holds a limousine permit, and SFO said plainly on July 22, 2026 that Tesla "has not been issued for any autonomous operations at SFO." The cars are driven by Tesla employees. California has not granted Tesla driverless deployment authority at all, which is why its Bay Area service still carries a safety driver while Austin does not.

Zoox at Harry Reid is employees-only. Zoox started the first phase of Las Vegas airport operations in April 2026, but public riders are not included yet while the company validates its purpose-built vehicle in a high-traffic ground transportation environment. Worth flagging for when it does open: Zoox's Las Vegas rides are currently free, because it has not been cleared to collect fares — so the first public Zoox airport ride will likely be the cheapest robotaxi airport trip in the country.

What Opens Next: The Pipeline

The pattern across all four airports that have already opened is consistent: metro service launches first, runs for a year or more, and airport access follows as a separate negotiation with the airport authority. Any city where Waymo or Tesla launched in 2026 is realistically a year or more away from airport curb rights, regardless of how good the driving is.

How to Check Before Your Flight

1. Check the airport, not the city. Fifteen Waymo metros, four Waymo airports. Metro coverage tells you nothing about curb access.
2. Drop the pin on the terminal in the app. If the airport is outside the service area the app refuses the destination or snaps it to a boundary. That is the definitive, always-current answer.
3. Read the pickup point. SFO and SJC Terminal B pickups are at rental car centers, not the curb. Add 10-25 minutes.
4. Compare door-to-door cost. Price the same route on Uber and Lyft — our ride cost calculator gives you the baseline — and add the tip you would normally pay a driver before you decide.
5. Keep a backup. Robotaxi airport fleets are small. If the match time is over 10 minutes and you have a flight, take the car that is already there.
