3 routes with Uber, Lyft & taxi fare estimates

How much does an Uber or Lyft cost from SFO (San Francisco International Airport)? Rideshare fares from SFO vary by destination, time of day, and surge demand. We compare Uber, Lyft, and taxi prices across 3 popular routes from this airport. Most major US airports charge a $2–$6 rideshare pickup surcharge that applies equally to both Uber and Lyft. Compare all options below to find the cheapest ride from SFO.
Estimated standard fares from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to 3 popular destinations. Compare distance, time, and price across providers at a glance.
| Destination | Distance | Time | UberX | Lyft | Taxi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco Downtown | 14.1 mi | ~34 min | — | — | — |
| San Jose Downtown | 43.4 mi | ~104 min | — | — | — |
| Oakland Downtown | 18.1 mi | ~44 min | — | — | — |
Fares reflect standard (non-surge) pricing. SFO airport surcharges of $2.50–$6 may apply and are included. Surge multipliers during peak flight banks can add 1.5x–3x. Click any destination for a detailed route breakdown.
SFO charges a $5.50 rideshare pickup surcharge (set by San Francisco International Airport, effective April 2024). The fee is the same on both Uber and Lyft, and is automatically included in your fare estimate. Pickup logistics differ by terminal:
Domestic Terminals (1, 2, 3)
Departures level (upper) for rideshare pickup
SFO is one of the few airports where rideshare pickup is on the upper/departures level, not arrivals.
International Terminal A & G
Departures level outside doors A6 and G7
Customs delays vary; same upper-level rule applies.
Peak Surge Windows
Friday evenings (5:00 PM – 8:00 PM) are reliably 1.5-2x surge as Bay Area weekend traffic compounds with airport demand. Sunday nights (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM) are second-worst.
Best Low-Surge Window
Tuesday and Wednesday mid-morning (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM) are the cheapest SFO rideshare windows. Late evenings after 10:00 PM are also low-surge but driver supply thins.
BART runs from SFO directly to Downtown San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley for $10.85-$13.35 — significantly cheaper than the $40-60 rideshare equivalent. The BART station is inside the International Terminal. SamTrans bus 292 to Downtown SF is $2.25.
SFO raised the rideshare pickup fee from $5.00 to $5.50 in April 2024. The airport also moved rideshare pickup from the arrivals level to the departures level in 2018 to reduce congestion — a change many infrequent flyers still get wrong. As of late 2025, SFO has been piloting a "rideshare staging waitlist" system that may eventually replace the current matching algorithm.

Computed from Uber's published San Francisco rates plus the $5.50 pickup fee, a typical SFO-to-Downtown SF UberX trip prices out around $42.10 — closer to $61.30 in Friday-evening surge and traffic, and nearer $32.80 on a Tuesday mid-morning. BART's $10.85 fare is 74% cheaper than the typical rideshare fare for the same destination. SFO is one of the few US airports where Lyft Lux and UberX trade leadership depending on time of day; UberX is typically $2-3 cheaper midday, Lyft Lux is sometimes $1-2 cheaper during heavy weekend surge windows because of differential surge algorithms.
Analysis by Vincent Ruan. See our methodology.
“SFO is the airport where first-time visitors most often make the wrong choice. The rideshare pickup is on the upper, departures level — not arrivals like every other airport — and the in-app directions sometimes get this wrong. If you are pulling a bag and your driver is "arriving" but you cannot find them, check whether you are on the right level before you panic. The other SFO trap is the Friday-night BART vs. rideshare math: a $40 Uber from SFO to SoMa in Friday evening surge is almost always slower than the $10.85 BART ride that gets you to Embarcadero in 30 minutes. For most travelers BART is the better default unless you have more than one bag or are going somewhere transit does not reach.”

Both Uber and Lyft offer multiple ride tiers from SFO. The table below estimates each tier’s price for a typical 12-mile downtown trip from SFO, based on our rate-card data. Tier multipliers come from Uber’s published fare pages and Lyft’s pricing page.
| Service Tier | Provider | Vs. UberX | Estimated Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| UberX | uber | baseline | $44–$55 |
| Uber Comfort | uber | +20% | $53–$66 |
| Uber XL | uber | +45% | $64–$80 |
| Uber Black | uber | +130% | $101–$126 |
| Lyft | lyft | -2% | $43–$54 |
| Lyft XL | lyft | +42% | $62–$78 |
| Lyft Lux | lyft | +120% | $97–$121 |
Includes the $5.50 SFO pickup surcharge. Surge multipliers during peak demand can push these estimates 1.5–3× higher; see our surge algorithm explainer.
