How to decide whether your whole group fits

Our recommendation is to evaluate passengers and luggage separately. First check that everyone can ride in the vehicle. Then check that every bag can be carried without relying on a seat that someone needs.

Waymo's seating policy allows a maximum of four riders. It also specifies that the front passenger seat is for riders at least eight years old, and younger children need their own child seat installed in the rear according to its instructions. Families should consider the actual seating arrangement as well as the headline passenger limit.

Measure the outside of each bag with handles and wheels included, and account for expanded zippers. A suitcase's advertised size or airline category is less helpful than its actual packed dimensions. Check the whole group before one person requests the ride on everyone's behalf.

Loading and collecting your bags

You handle the loading yourself. Keep the phone used to request the ride accessible instead of packing it inside a suitcase, and organize the group so someone checks the cabin while the luggage is collected.

The trunk can be released in the app or above the license plate. After loading, use its close button. Waymo says it opens on arrival when you exit. If a control does not work or your bags do not fit, use rider support in the app before starting the trip.

Our departure checklist is simple: count bags before loading, count them again after unloading, then check the seats for phones, chargers, jackets, and small backpacks. Assign one person to do the final check so each traveler is not assuming someone else has it covered.

Airport trips: check service and pickup separately from trunk space

A suitable luggage load does not establish that Waymo serves your airport, terminal, or pickup point. Enter the exact destination and check the current route offered in the app. Use Waymo's service information and the app's current pickup instructions for your booking.

For an arrival, think through the route from baggage claim to the meeting point while carrying everything yourself. If you are depending on help with heavy luggage or need transport that confirms a particular vehicle, arrange that before requesting the ride.

For a departure, include time to load bags and resolve a fit problem. A last-minute repack or replacement vehicle is harder to accommodate when you have planned only the driving time to the terminal.

Check fit before comparing the fare

Once you know the vehicle works for your party, compare its actual offer with the alternatives. A cheaper quote for a car that needs two trips is not the lower total for your group. Include the whole party and every bag in the decision.
