Uber and Lyft Car Requirements 2026: How Old Can Your Car Be?

Uber car requirements in 2026: UberX takes 2011 or newer in most US metros and 2010 in 16. Lyft is stricter in California, NYC, Maryland and DC.

Model-year cutoffs read from Uber's eligible-vehicles tool for 52 US metros and regions, and from Lyft's Help Center and lyft.com city pages, on November 3, 2026. Other rules quoted from Uber and Lyft help pages, NYC TLC rules and state laws. We did not sign up as drivers. Reviewed on November 3, 2026. Uber car requirements

For UberX, your car needs four doors, room for at least four riders and a clean title. It also has to be new enough for where you drive. Uber's oldest allowed year is 2011 in 33 of the 52 US metros and regions we checked, 2010 in 16 and 2014 in 3.

Lyft's rules are similar: four doors, 5 to 8 seatbelts and, by its Help Center, 2010 or newer in most states. Lyft is stricter in California (2013), New York City (2014), Maryland (2015) and Washington, DC (2016).

Key Takeaways

  • Uber's oldest allowed year for UberX is 2011 in 33 areas, 2010 in 16 and 2014 in 3 (Anchorage, Baltimore and Connecticut).
  • Lyft's Help Center lists 2010 or newer for most states, but 2013 for California, 2014 for New York City, 2015 for Maryland and 2016 for DC.
  • A car can qualify for one app and not the other. A 2012 car works for Uber in Los Angeles but not for Lyft. A 2010 car works for Lyft in Chicago but not for Uber.
  • Lyft's own pages disagree on the year in 11 of 16 big cities. Confirm in the app before you buy a car.
  • Two-door cars and salvage or rebuilt titles are never eligible. Many places also require an inspection, and your insurance must show your name.

Uber Car Requirements for UberX

Uber's vehicle requirements for UberX are short:

  • "4 doors and seat at least 4 riders." Uber's sign-up page says the same thing: "at least four passenger seats, excluding the driver's seat."
  • A model year that meets your area's cutoff. More on that below.
  • "Title must not be salvaged, reconstructed, or rebuilt."
  • "No cosmetic damage, missing pieces, or commercial branding."
  • "Heating and air conditioning must be in good working order."

You also need three documents: a valid driver's license, proof of vehicle registration and "proof of vehicle insurance with your name on the document." The car doesn't have to be yours. If it isn't, Uber says you need the owner's permission and must be listed as an insured driver on the car's policy.

Your own insurance has to meet your state's minimum. Uber's insurance page says Uber adds liability coverage of $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 for property while you wait for a request, and at least $1,000,000 once you accept a trip. Damage to your own car on a trip is covered only if your personal policy includes comprehensive and collision, with a $2,500 deductible.

How Old Can Your Car Be for Uber? Oldest Model Year in 52 Metros

Uber doesn't publish one national age rule. Its eligible-vehicles tool lists every eligible model with "the oldest vehicle year that's allowed" in each area. We read it for 52 US metros and regions on November 3, 2026. Connecticut and New Jersey are statewide regions in Uber's tool.

33 areas accept 2011 or newer, which means a car up to 15 years old. 16 accept 2010 or newer, including New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Boston. Only Anchorage, Baltimore and Connecticut require 2014 or newer.

Uber says this year "generally increases by one year every year." So a car that just qualifies today will likely age out next year.

New York City is a special case. The tool says 2010, but every Uber car in NYC must also hold a TLC for-hire vehicle license. The TLC says "only owners of wheelchair accessible vehicles may apply for a new FHV vehicle license," so many new NYC drivers rent a car that already has one.

The table shows every area, with Lyft's two published years next to Uber's.

Sources: Uber's eligible-vehicles tool for each area; Lyft's Help Center state pages (for example California); Lyft's driver application pages on lyft.com. Uber's year is the one most models list. * Lyft says some regions in Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas have their own age rules (20 of the areas in this table).

Lyft Car Requirements

Lyft car requirements are close to Uber's. From Lyft's vehicle requirements page:

  • "All Lyft vehicles are required to have 4 doors" and "a minimum of 5 seatbelts (including the driver's), with a maximum of 8."
  • A title that is not salvage, non-repairable or rebuilt.
  • "Taxis and stretch limousines will not be approved."
  • A model year that meets Lyft's rule for your area.

Lyft publishes its age rules in two places, and they don't always match. Its driver application pages on lyft.com list a year per city, and Lyft tells new drivers to check those. Its Help Center lists a year per state, on pages written for drivers who are already approved.

The two agree in only 5 of the 16 big cities where both give a year. Usually the city page shows a year one older than the Help Center, such as 2009 instead of 2010. San Diego's city page says 2008 while the California Help Center page says 2013. Miami's says 2012, stricter than Florida's 2010. Confirm in the Lyft Driver app before you buy or rent a car.

By the Help Center, most states accept 2010 or newer. The exceptions:

  • 2011 or newer: Washington; Portland and Eugene in Oregon; Minneapolis–St. Paul, Rochester and Duluth in Minnesota.
  • 2012 or newer: Alabama, plus parts of Mississippi and New Mexico.
  • 2013 or newer: California.
  • 2014 or newer: Alaska, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York City, where the car must also be a TLC-licensed vehicle.
  • 2015 or newer: Maryland.
  • 2016 or newer: Washington, DC, South Dakota, Vermont and Bloomington, Illinois. Lyft's DC page also says "2013 or newer" further down, so check the app.
  • Age limits instead of a year: no older than 16 years in Georgia, and no older than 15 years in Pennsylvania.

Uber vs Lyft: Where Your Car Qualifies for One but Not the Other

We matched each Uber area to Lyft's Help Center rule for the same place. Where Lyft uses a fixed year (49 areas), the year is the same in 17. Lyft is one year looser in 25. Lyft is stricter in 7.

  • California, New York City, Maryland and DC favor Uber. A 2012 car works for UberX in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but Lyft's Help Center says 2013. In DC, Uber takes 2011 and Lyft 2016.
  • In 25 areas, including Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Detroit and Orlando, Lyft's Help Center takes a 2010 car but Uber wants 2011.
  • In 17, including Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Tampa, both say 2010 or newer.

These comparisons use Lyft's Help Center. Where Lyft's city page shows a different year, the table above lists it. If your car is borderline, check both apps. You can drive for both at once if your car qualifies for each. Our comparison of which app pays drivers more can help you choose.

What Cars Are Not Eligible for Uber or Lyft?

  • Two-door cars. Both apps require four doors, and New York City's TLC rules say "no For-Hire Vehicle can be a two door vehicle."
  • Cars with too few seats: fewer than four rider seats for Uber, fewer than five seatbelts for Lyft.
  • Salvage, rebuilt or reconstructed titles.
  • Cars with cosmetic damage, missing pieces or commercial branding (Uber), and taxis or stretch limousines (Lyft).
  • Cars older than your area's cutoff.

We also checked some common cars against Uber's New York City list. The Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Corvette, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Smart Fortwo and Chevrolet Spark are not listed for UberX there. Everyday cars like the Camry, Corolla, Civic, Accord, Prius, RAV4, CR-V and Altima are listed from 2010. Pickups like the F-150 are listed too, but only versions with four doors qualify. Uber's tool warns that a listed model that "does not comply with the vehicle requirements for ride options in your area" is still not eligible.

A few models only count from a later year. In New York City these are the Chevrolet Volt (2016), Mini Cooper (2016), Audi RS 7 (2019), Toyota Prius Prime (2020), Toyota Mirai (2021) and Ford Maverick (2022). Uber doesn't say why.

Do You Need a Vehicle Inspection?

Often, yes. The rules come from the apps and from state or city law:

  • DC, Maryland and Virginia: Uber says you need a state vehicle inspection on file. You get 90 days in DC and 30 days in Virginia; Maryland needs it before your first pickup. Lyft says Maryland requires cars 10 years or older to be inspected every 6 months.
  • California: an inspection every 12 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, using the state's 19-point checklist.
  • Chicago, Colorado and Massachusetts: yearly inspections. Massachusetts adds a separate $15 rideshare inspection.
  • New York City: TLC cars are inspected three times a year.
  • Pennsylvania and New Jersey: your regular state inspection counts.

Sources: Lyft Help Center pages for California, Chicago, Colorado, Massachusetts and Maryland; NYC TLC rules §59A-26; Uber's DC, Maryland and Virginia help page linked above.

Uber's requirements page says "vehicle requirements vary by region, so we'll show you what's needed" when you sign up. Lyft lists inspection forms on each state's Help Center page.

Mileage, Airport and License Plate Rules

  • Minneapolis–St. Paul (Lyft): cars from 2011 to 2015 must have fewer than 150,000 miles.
  • Pennsylvania (Lyft): fewer than 350,000 miles.
  • Atlanta airport (Lyft): to give rides at ATL, your car must be 10 years old or newer, and you need a placard.
  • License plates: some Lyft city pages ask for an in-state plate (Los Angeles asks for a California plate, Denver for a Colorado plate), while others such as Chicago accept out-of-state plates.

State Laws That Limit Car Age

Of the rideshare laws we read, only two set an age limit:

  • Washington: state law says a rideshare car can be "not more than 15 years old as determined by the model year." Companies must give drivers 120 days' notice before changing age rules.
  • Pennsylvania: the statute sets 10 model years, or 12 for an alternative fuel car driven no more than 350,000 miles, and lets the state utility commission change that. In practice both apps accept cars up to about 15 years old there.

California's and Colorado's rules require yearly rideshare inspections but no age limit. Texas's and Florida's rideshare laws set neither. NYC's TLC rules have no age limit either, but require three inspections a year.

Driver Requirements: Age and Experience

Uber's main requirements page says "new drivers must be at least 25 years old," and asks for at least one year of US driving experience. When we picked Chicago on that page, it said 23 instead. Uber's help center has a different list:

  • 23: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Minnesota.
  • 25: California, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, New Jersey, New York outside NYC, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.
  • 21: every state not listed.

Check the requirements page for your city before you apply. Lyft's application page says "You'll need to be 25 or older to drive with Lyft." New York City has its own rules because drivers need a TLC license.

Want Higher-Paying Ride Types?

Premium rides need newer cars. In most areas we checked, Uber's tool lists 2018 or newer for Comfort and 2020 or newer for Black, and XL needs seven seats. See which models qualify in our Uber Comfort car list, UberXL car list, Uber Black guide and Lyft Black car list.

No Eligible Car? Renting or Leasing

Uber's help center says "rental vehicles are only allowed in certain markets, and only if sourced from an authorized Uber rental partner." You find those partners on Uber's Vehicle Marketplace. Uber's rental FAQ adds that other rentals need extra steps and may not be approved.

Lyft only allows rentals through Express Drive, with cars from Flexdrive and Hertz that are "2018 or newer." A normal counter rental usually won't be approved by either app. Our guide to renting a car for Uber or Lyft compares weekly prices in 48 markets, and our guide to how much Uber drivers make shows what you can expect to earn.

How We Checked

On November 3, 2026 we opened Uber's eligible-vehicles page for 52 US metros and regions. Each page lists eligible models with the oldest model year allowed for each ride option. For each area we used the year most models list for UberX, and noted the few models that start later.

For Lyft we read the "Vehicle requirements" section of Lyft's Help Center page for each state, and its city pages for Chicago, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Portland, Seattle, New Orleans, New York City and Washington, DC. We matched each Uber area to the Lyft page for the same place. We also read Lyft's driver application pages on lyft.com for every city that lists a year, and show those years where they differ.

Other rules are quoted from Uber's and Lyft's help pages, NYC TLC rules, and Washington and Pennsylvania law. These rules change, and Uber says the model year moves up every year. Check the app before you buy or rent a car.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the oldest car I can use for Uber?+

It depends on where you drive. Uber's eligible-vehicles tool shows 2011 or newer for UberX in 33 of the 52 US metros and regions we checked, 2010 or newer in 16, and 2014 or newer in 3 (Anchorage, Baltimore and Connecticut). Uber says the cutoff generally moves up by one year every year.

Can I use a 2008 car for Uber?+

Not for UberX in any of the 52 areas we checked. The oldest year Uber allows is 2010, and most areas start at 2011.

Is a 2010 car too old for Uber?+

It depends on the city. A 2010 car still qualifies for UberX in 16 areas, including New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Boston. In 33 others, including Chicago, Denver and Washington, DC, Uber wants 2011 or newer, and Anchorage, Baltimore and Connecticut want 2014 or newer.

What cars are not eligible for Uber?+

Cars with two doors or fewer than four passenger seats, salvage or rebuilt titles, cosmetic damage, commercial branding, or broken heat or air conditioning. In New York City, sports cars like the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Corvette and Mazda MX-5 Miata are not listed for UberX at all. A few models qualify only from a later year, such as the Volt (2016) and Cooper (2016).

What are the car requirements for Lyft?+

Four doors, 5 to 8 seatbelts including the driver's, a title that is not salvage or rebuilt, and a model year that meets Lyft's rule for your area. Lyft's Help Center lists 2010 or newer for most states, 2013 for California, 2014 for New York City, 2015 for Maryland and 2016 for Washington, DC. Lyft's city pages sometimes show a different year, so confirm in the Lyft Driver app.

Can I use a 2004 car for Lyft?+

Not in any state we checked. Lyft's Help Center lists 2010 or newer as its oldest fixed year in the 50 states and DC, and Georgia and Pennsylvania allow cars no older than 16 and 15 years. Puerto Rico allows cars up to 20 years old, which still rules out a 2004 car.

What cars are not eligible for Lyft?+

Cars with fewer than four doors, fewer than five seatbelts, a salvage, non-repairable or rebuilt title, taxis and stretch limousines, and cars older than your area allows. Rented cars are only allowed through Lyft's Express Drive program.

Does Uber require a vehicle inspection?+

In many places, yes. In DC, Maryland and Virginia you need a state inspection on file: Uber gives you 90 days in DC and 30 days in Virginia, while Maryland needs it before your first pickup. California law requires a rideshare inspection every 12 months or 50,000 miles. Uber says it shows what your area needs when you sign up.

Can I drive for Uber with a two-door car?+

No. Uber requires four doors and room for at least four riders. Lyft also requires four doors, and New York City's TLC bans two-door for-hire vehicles.

Does the car have to be in my name to drive for Uber?+

No, but Uber says you need the owner's permission and you must be listed as an insured driver on the car's insurance policy. Otherwise the car will not be approved. Your insurance document has to show your name.

Can I use a rental car for Uber or Lyft?+

Uber says rentals are allowed only in some markets and only from its authorized partners, which you find on its Vehicle Marketplace. Other rentals need extra steps and may be turned down. Lyft only allows rentals through Express Drive, with cars from Flexdrive and Hertz. A normal counter rental usually won't be approved by either app.

How old do you have to be to drive for Uber?+

Uber's main requirements page says new drivers must be at least 25, but it shows a different age for some cities (23 for Chicago when we checked). Uber's help center lists 23 in five states, 25 in 20 and 21 in the rest. Check the requirements page for your city. Lyft asks for 25 or older in most places.
