- Uber works in 29 of the 51 places we checked, including Mexico, Paris, London, Spain, Dubai and Canada. Your US account works there with no new download.
- In 13 places, Uber is limited to taxis or chauffeur cars. That includes Japan, Italy (outside Calabria), Korea, Greece, Ireland, Budapest and Istanbul. Florence offers chauffeur cars only, no taxis.
- There is no Uber in 9 places: Singapore, Thailand, Bali, the Philippines, China, Iceland, Aruba, the Bahamas and St. Thomas. Use Grab, DiDi or the local taxi.
- The Lyft app just went to Europe. Since September 30, 2026, the US Lyft app works in parts of Europe, starting with Barcelona and Hamburg.
- Airport rides are often cheaper than at home. Uber's own averages put 11 of 17 foreign airport rides below the typical US airport-to-downtown ride ($51).
- A normal ride around town costs about $5 to $30 in most places, by Uber's own city averages. At home, a 15-minute UberX costs $11 to $19.
- Watch the airports. Los Cabos and Tulum don't allow Uber pickups, and Cancún's are unreliable.
Planning a winter trip and wondering if you can just open Uber when you land? Usually yes, but "Uber" means different things in different countries. In Paris it is a regular driver. In Tokyo it is a taxi. In Bangkok it doesn't exist. And at some of the most popular beach airports, the app works in town but not at the arrivals curb.
We checked 51 places popular with American travelers, using Uber's own city and airport pages, airport operators, transport regulators and local news, on October 4, 2026. We also pulled Uber's published average prices for 17 foreign airports and 12 US airports, so you can see what a ride costs compared with home.

Uber Airport Prices Abroad vs. at Home
Is Uber cheaper abroad? For the airport ride, often yes. Uber publishes the average price of a ride from many airports into the city over the past month. We converted those averages to dollars and set them next to the same numbers for US airports.
| Airport → city | Ride | Local price | In US$ | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Median of these 12 US airports: $51.
Prices are Uber's own "average price for the past 1 month" from its airport pickup pages, read 2026-10-04. "Ride" is UberX where Uber offers it, otherwise Taxi, otherwise the cheapest option shown. Distance is Uber's figure for the same route in the opposite direction. Converted at ECB reference rates for 2026-10-02. These are averages, not quotes.
What stands out:
- Mexico is the bargain. MX$133 (about $7) from Puerto Vallarta airport is about what a minimum-fare Uber costs in a US city (see our minimum fare study). Mexico City averages about $11.
- New York is the outlier at home. Uber's average from JFK to Midtown is $119. Only 2 of the 17 foreign rides cost more, and both are long trips to far-out airports (Milan Malpensa and Osaka Kansai).
- Europe splits in two. Madrid (about $28), Barcelona ($36) and Paris ($49) are cheaper than the US median. London ($75) and Munich ($104) are not.
- In Japan, Uber costs what a taxi costs, because it is a taxi. Uber's average from Haneda to Minato is ¥9,375. Haneda's flat-rate taxi is ¥7,600 to the Tokyo Station area by day plus up to ¥990 in tolls, but it doesn't serve Minato, Ginza or Shinagawa.
How Much Is an Uber Ride Around Town?
Airport rides are long, so they cost more. For a normal ride in the city, Uber posts its own average for 22 of these cities. For 7 more, Uber posts nothing, so we worked out the price ourselves from the official taxi meter. Here is every number, in dollars.
Rows marked "our estimate" are RideWise numbers. All other rows are Uber's own averages; click a ride to see the source. Where Uber only books taxis, the ride is a taxi. Converted at ECB rates for 2026-10-02 (Colombian pesos: US Treasury rate; dirhams: fixed peg).
At home, a 15-minute, 5-mile UberX ride costs about $11 to $19 in big US cities, based on our rate cards. So:
- Mexico, Colombia and Canada cost less than home. A ride to a mall, museum or station is $5 to $12.
- Taxis are cheap in Dubai, Seoul and Hong Kong: about $5, $6 and $9 for a short ride, by our estimate.
- Most of Europe costs about the same as home, or a bit more: $15 to $29 for a ride of 15 minutes or so.
- Florence is the exception at $47, because Uber there only offers Uber Black.
Is There Uber in Mexico? Yes, but Airports Are the Problem
Uber is easy to use in Mexican cities, and it is cheap. Uber's own averages show an airport ride costing $7 to $24. The problem is the airport. Mexico's federal transport ministry says ride apps are not authorized at federal airports, but a court order and local deals mean each airport works differently, and the rules change.
Is Uber safe in Mexico?
The US government's advice is to book a ride in an app like Uber or use an official taxi stand, not to wave down a street taxi. The State Department rates Mexico at Level 2, "exercise increased caution." It tells its own staff in Mexico to use "regulated taxi stands or app-based services like Uber or Cabify" and not to wave down taxis on the street (State Department). The US Embassy gives travelers the same tip. In Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel, it also says to download the state's "Guest Assist" app for emergencies (US Embassy). Before you get in, match the car's plate with the one in the app.
Is there Uber in Cancún?
Yes in town, shaky at the airport. UberX runs in Cancún, but the state regulator lists DiDi, inDrive and iTaxi, not Uber, which operates under a court order. Sources at the airport operator, ASUR, told local press in March 2026 that it has no plans to open a pickup area for apps. Some airport rides still happen: Uber's average from the airport into Cancún is MX$449, about $24. But a curbside pickup can fall through.
- Most reliable: book Uber Reserve with your flight number before you land. Since July 2025, Reserve in Cancún uses licensed taxis.
- Cheapest: the ADO bus to the Hotel Zone, MX$140 a person (about $8), running only from about 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Taxi: a 2025 guide put airport taxis at MX$600 and up (about $33). The licensed operator Cabsi has quoted US$24 online to the Hotel Zone if you book ahead; walk-up prices run higher. Quintana Roo announced an official airport taxi fare list in March 2026, but we could not confirm it was published.
Is there Uber in Tulum?
Yes in town, no at the airport. Uber runs in Tulum, but app cars have not been allowed to pick up at Tulum's new airport since it opened in December 2023. When the airport opened, one airport taxi operator charged MX$1,716 to the Hotel Zone (about $94) or MX$1,496 to downtown (about $82) for up to two people; we found no newer published fare. The ADO bus to downtown Tulum was MX$175 at the time.
Is there Uber in Mexico City?
Yes, and it is cheap. Uber's average from the airport into the city is MX$198, about $11. Since March 2026 the airport has signed app pickup points, but they are a few minutes' walk from the terminal, not at the curb. Authorized airport taxis charge about MX$370 to MX$440 to Roma Norte (about $20 to $24) and MX$440 to MX$475 to Polanco (about $24 to $26), depending on the company.
Is there Uber in Cabo?
Yes in town, drop-off only at the airport. UberX works in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. But a US Consulate security alert from June 2, 2026 says apps can drop off at Los Cabos airport and cannot pick up there, and advises numbered, plated airport taxis. Those cost about $65 to $85 to San José del Cabo and $90 to $115 to Cabo San Lucas, according to The Cabo Sun. Uber's average airport ride is MX$279 (about $15), so if a car does reach you, it is far cheaper. Many resorts also limit Uber at the door.
Is there Uber in Puerto Vallarta?
Yes. In October 2025, Jalisco's governor said the state and the National Guard would respect Uber's court order, so Uber can pick up at the Puerto Vallarta airport while the court case runs. There is no official zone; use the meeting point in the app. Uber's average airport ride is MX$133, about $7, the cheapest in our table. An authorized airport taxi (Aeromóvil) to downtown or the Hotel Zone is MX$406 for up to three people (about $22), or $29 at its dollar price, so pay in pesos.
The Caribbean and Costa Rica
Many islands either don't have Uber or only let it book taxis. Taxi fares are usually set by the government, so every taxi charges the same.
Is there Uber in Puerto Rico?
Yes, UberX. Uber is the only ride-hailing company in Puerto Rico; there is no Lyft. At San Juan airport, Uber picks up at designated areas (Terminal A, and columns 16 to 19 for Terminals B and C). Set taxi base fares from the airport are $12 to Isla Verde, $17 to Condado and $21 to Old San Juan per car, plus a $3 airport fee and $1 per extra bag (tolls and tip extra).
Is there Uber in the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana, Santo Domingo)?
Yes, with set pickup points. After years of fights with taxi unions, Uber now has marked pickup spots at both big airports. In Punta Cana, the airport's map marks separate pickup points for UberX and Uber Select at both terminals. Uber Select uses licensed tourist taxis and is the only Uber option allowed to pick up at Bávaro and Punta Cana hotels. In Santo Domingo, signed pickup points opened under a May 2025 agreement. Taxis from Punta Cana airport cost about $20 to $40 to the Bávaro resorts ($50 to Hard Rock) per car for up to four, on the latest (2024) rate sheet, and $40 from Santo Domingo's airport to the city.
Is there Uber in Jamaica?
Partly. UberX runs in Kingston, but in a legal gray zone: the Transport Authority treats private cars on ride apps as unlicensed and has seized many of them. Uber's six-month average for an airport ride there is J$2,668 (about $17). In Montego Bay, where most tourists land, Uber offers only Uber Taxi; its six-month airport average is J$3,109 (about $20). The authorized JUTA taxi desk is just outside Customs.
Is there Uber in Barbados?
Taxis only, since October 2025. Uber launched in Barbados with licensed taxis at the Transport Authority's rates. Prices show in US dollars and payment is cashless. The official taxi rate from the airport is BDS$74 (US$37) to Bridgetown and BDS$122 (US$61) to Sandy Lane, Holetown and Porters.
Is there Uber in Aruba?
No. Aruba is not on Uber's list of countries. The government sets taxi fares from the airport: $41 to Palm Beach, $38 to Eagle Beach and $26 to Oranjestad, per car for up to four people, plus $5 on Sundays and from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Is there Uber in the Bahamas?
No. There was talk in early 2026 of Uber launching with taxis, but the taxi union rejected it and no license was issued. From Nassau airport, set taxi fares for two people are $29 to Cable Beach, $36 to downtown and $45 to Paradise Island, plus a $2 bridge toll and $5 for each extra person.
Is there Uber in St. Thomas?
No. Uber doesn't operate in the US Virgin Islands, and ride-hailing with private cars has not been legalized there. Airport taxis are shared vans with per-person rates: about $11 to $12 for one person (a bit less each for two or more) to Charlotte Amalie hotels, and $23 ($17 each) to Red Hook, plus $3 a bag.
Is there Uber in Costa Rica?
Yes, but in a legal gray zone. Uber has run in Costa Rica since 2015 without a law that covers it. The San José airport operator says only its orange taxis are authorized, so app pickups there are contested. In June 2026 a legislative committee added a ban on app pickups and drop-offs at airports to a pending ride-hailing bill; in August, drivers said the government had agreed to allow airport pickups instead. The bill is not law yet. Orange taxis must use the government meter, at most ₡730 (about $1.60) for the first kilometer and ₡730 for each one after.
South America
Is there Uber in Colombia (Medellín, Bogotá, Cartagena)?
Yes, UberX. Uber runs openly in Colombia, even though no law clearly authorizes it, and DiDi and Cabify run too. Airport taxi fares are set by each city. Medellín's official city-to-airport taxi fare is COP 132,000 (about $38); use it to check what the white airport taxis quote. From Cartagena's airport to the Old City it is COP 20,200 (about $6). In Bogotá, taxis use the meter plus a COP 8,000 airport fee.
Is there Uber in Peru (Lima)?
Yes. At Lima's new airport terminal, which opened in June 2025, Uber and Cabify each have a pickup zone in the car park, about 50 meters from the door. There is no official taxi fare; travel guides put a taxi to Miraflores at about S/60 to S/75 (about $18 to $22).
Europe
Uber works in most big European cities, but it is not the same Uber. Every driver is licensed in some way, and in several countries the app only books taxis or chauffeur cars. Two money tips apply almost everywhere: check the official flat taxi fare from the airport, and check the train.
Is there Uber in Paris?
Yes, UberX. Drivers are licensed private-hire (VTC) drivers, and the app can also book metered Paris taxis. Uber's average from Charles de Gaulle into Paris is €44, about $49. That is close to the official flat taxi fare: €56 to the Right Bank or €65 to the Left Bank, day or night, with no luggage charge (Service-Public.fr). In traffic or a surge, the flat taxi often wins.
Is there Uber in London?
Yes, UberX. Drivers hold London private-hire licenses, and you can also book a black cab in the app. Uber's average from Heathrow to London is £57, about $75. A metered black cab runs about £70 to £120, per TfL. At Heathrow, follow the "App & Private hire pick up" signs into the terminal car park. Cars do not wait at the curb.
Is there Uber in Italy (Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice)?
Only taxis and chauffeur cars where tourists go. UberX runs in Italy only in Calabria, in the far south, since July 2026. In Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice, the Uber app books licensed white taxis, or more expensive licensed chauffeur cars (Comfort, Black). What you get depends on the city:
- Rome: Uber's average taxi from Fiumicino is €58. The official flat taxi fare is €55 to anywhere inside the old city walls, all extras included (Rome airports). Just take the white taxi from the rank. Real taxis are white, with a TAXI sign on the roof and a license number on the doors. The airport warns travelers to be wary of people inside the terminal who offer rides.
- Florence: Uber's page says, "While you can't request Florence taxis with the Uber app, you can request Uber Black." Its airport page lists a Van, and Uber's cheaper Comfort cars launched across Italy in July 2026, so check the app. A regular taxi from the airport to central hotels is a fixed €28 by day (€30 on Sundays and holidays, €32 at night), plus €1.20 a bag.
- Milan: From Malpensa, Uber's cheapest option averages €118 (Comfort). The fixed taxi fare is €114 to anywhere in Milan, and the Malpensa Express train costs far less.
- Venice: Cars stop at Piazzale Roma; they can't enter the canals. The land taxi is a fixed €40. A private water taxi to your hotel is €160 for up to four people (€15 more at night).
Is there Uber in Spain (Barcelona, Madrid)?
Yes, UberX works in Barcelona and Madrid. Uber's averages from the airport are low: €32 in Barcelona (about $36) and €25 in Madrid (about $28). In Madrid, the official taxi fare from the airport is a flat €33 to anywhere inside the M-30 ring, so UberX usually wins (Aena). Barcelona has a twist: Catalonia is debating a law that would limit app cars like Uber to pre-booked trips and shrink their numbers over time. It hasn't passed (its backers expect a final vote in January 2027), so UberX still works today. Cabify and Bolt also run in both cities.
Is there Uber in Portugal (Lisbon, Porto)?
Yes, UberX works in Lisbon and Porto, with licensed ride-hail drivers. Bolt is the main competitor. From October 15, 2026, Lisbon airport's taxi rank switches to fixed fares: €16 or €19 by day, depending on the zone.
Is there Uber in Greece (Athens)?
Taxis only. In Athens, Uber books licensed yellow taxis. The flat taxi fare from Athens airport to the center rose in September 2026 to €50 by day and €65 from midnight to 5 a.m. Uber gets you the same cabs, which helps you skip touts. On Santorini and Mykonos, Uber books the islands' licensed taxis (plus 6- to 9-seat vans), but there are few of them in summer, so pre-book your airport or port transfer.
Is there Uber in Amsterdam?
Yes, UberX, but under Dutch rules every driver holds a taxi license. Uber's average 16-minute city ride is €22. From Schiphol, the train to Centraal Station takes about 15 minutes and costs far less than any car.
Is there Uber in Ireland (Dublin)?
Taxis only. In Dublin, as in the rest of Ireland, Uber books licensed taxis, not private cars, and the government said in February 2026 it has "no intention" of changing that. Uber does show a fixed fare up front. Dublin Airport puts a metered taxi to the city at about €30 to €45. Uber's airport pickup is Zone 18.
Is there Uber in Germany (Berlin, Munich)?
Yes, UberX, but the cars come from licensed private-hire firms with professional drivers, and the app also books taxis. Munich is expensive: Uber's average from the airport is €93, about $104, and since July 2026 the city sets minimum fares for app rides. The fixed taxi fare from Munich airport to the main station is €96. In both cities, the airport train is much cheaper.
Is there Uber in Prague, Budapest and Vienna?
- Prague: yes. Uber is the airport's official taxi. Book in the app or at an Uber kiosk, then give the driver a PIN. Ignore people with "Info" signs offering rides.
- Budapest: taxis only. Uber left Hungary in 2016 and came back in June 2024 in partnership with Főtaxi, through its subsidiary F-Mobilitás, so every ride is a licensed yellow taxi at the city's regulated fare, with no surge.
- Vienna: yes, though drivers hold taxi licenses. Your Uber waits on the Departures level, one floor up from arrivals.
Is there Uber in Istanbul?
Taxis only. Uber in Istanbul books licensed yellow and black taxis. At the airport, request in the app, go to the taxi line outside Exit Door 9 or 13, and show the driver your PIN. BiTaksi is the main local app.
Is there Uber in Iceland?
No. Uber does not operate in Iceland, and Bolt doesn't either. A taxi from Keflavík airport to Reykjavík costs about ISK 22,500 (about $184) with Hreyfill. The Flybus is about ISK 3,999 (about $33).
Asia and the Middle East
In much of Asia, Uber either books only taxis or isn't there at all, so set up a local app before you land.
Is there Uber in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto)?
Yes, Uber works in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, but it calls a taxi. Private drivers are still mostly not allowed in Japan, so the app books licensed taxis and licensed hire cars ("Premier"). Since 2024 there is also a small "Private car" option run under taxi companies, but don't count on it.
- What it costs: Uber's average from Haneda to Minato (central Tokyo) is ¥9,375, about $59, for a taxi. From Kansai airport to Osaka it is ¥25,683, about $163, because Kansai is 51 km out. Uber adds a booking fee of up to a few hundred yen.
- Flat-rate taxis from Haneda: ¥7,600 to Chiyoda, which includes Tokyo Station, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (¥9,000 at night), plus expressway tolls of up to ¥990. Shibuya is ¥8,500 and Shinjuku ¥9,000. Six wards are not covered and go on the meter: Minato, Chuo (Ginza), Shinagawa, Koto, Ota and Meguro. No booking needed at Haneda's taxi stand (Tokyo private taxi co-op). Uber also offers flat prices to and from Haneda and Narita in some areas, per its Tokyo taxi page.
- Kansai tip: MK's reserved flat-rate taxi starts at ¥16,400 to Umeda and ¥23,800 to Kyoto Station, plus tolls (Kansai Airport).
- Uber's Tokyo taxi page lists only cards and PayPal for payment. GO, a major Japanese taxi app, takes foreign credit cards and Apple Pay.
Is there Uber in Korea (Seoul)?
Taxis only. In Korea, Uber runs as Uber Taxi: every car is a licensed taxi, plus a premium Black option. You can pay in the app or pay the driver in person, in cash or by card. From Incheon, Seoul's International Taxi service charges a flat ₩70,000 to ₩95,000 (about $52 to $70) for a standard car, depending on the zone; book ahead online (International Taxi). Kakao T is the big local app, but travel guides report that foreign cards often fail in it.
Is there Uber in Hong Kong?
Yes, UberX still runs. Hong Kong passed a ride-hailing law in October 2025, most of it took effect in August 2026, and Uber says it is preparing its license application, due by October 30, 2026 (Hong Kong Free Press). Uber's average from the airport to Yau Tsim Mong in Kowloon is HK$304, about $39. A red city taxi to Tsim Sha Tsui is about HK$290 including tolls but not luggage, per the airport. Cash works only on Uber Taxi rides, not UberX (Uber).
Is there Uber in Singapore, Thailand, Bali or the Philippines?
No. Uber sold its Southeast Asia business to Grab in March 2018 (Grab), and it has not come back for rides. Download Grab before you go; it takes cards and cash.
- Singapore: Grab, Gojek or a metered taxi. Changi says a taxi to the city runs about S$25 to S$45, plus a S$6 to S$8 airport surcharge.
- Bangkok and Phuket: Grab or Bolt. At Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport, public taxis run on the meter plus a ฿50 airport fee and tolls (Airports of Thailand).
- Manila: Grab, or an official coupon taxi from NAIA: ₱330 to Greenbelt or Legaspi Village in Makati, ₱440 to Rockwell (NAIA).
- Bali: Grab or Gojek. Book in the app so the price is set before you get in.
Is there Uber in China?
No. Uber sold its China business to DiDi in 2016. Install DiDi before you fly; it has an English version and takes international cards. At Beijing Capital airport, app cars pick up in the parking garages, not at the curb (Beijing Capital airport).
Is there Uber in Dubai?
Yes. UberX, Comfort and XL all run, but every car belongs to a licensed limousine company, so there are no private drivers. Uber in Dubai takes cash (Uber). Uber's six-month average for UberX rides from the airport is AED 119, about $32, for 22 minutes. Careem and Bolt are the local alternatives. Since March 30, 2026, the Uber app also books WeRide self-driving taxis in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah (Dubai Media Office).
Canada
Is there Uber in Canada (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal)?
Yes. Uber and Lyft both work in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, with the same apps and accounts you use at home. Uber's averages from the airport: Toronto CA$45 (about $32), Vancouver CA$36 (about $25), Montreal CA$38 (about $27).
Flat taxi fares are a good backup when the apps surge: CA$70 from Pearson to downtown Toronto (Toronto Pearson), CA$46 from YVR to downtown Vancouver (YVR), and CA$49.45 from Montreal's airport by day (Montréal-Trudeau). In Montreal, Uber and Lyft pick up at Door 28, not the main curb.
Does Lyft Work Outside the US?
Until this fall, the answer was "only in Canada." That just changed. On September 30, 2026, Lyft said North American riders can now use their own Lyft app in Europe, with the same account and payment methods (Lyft). Lyft doesn't bring its own drivers. It plugs your app into a partner network, and it says drivers on its European apps, Freenow by Lyft and, in London, Gett by Lyft, will get these rides. Lyft bought Freenow in 2025.
- Now (early access): Barcelona and Hamburg.
- During October 2026: London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens and Warsaw.
- By the end of October: Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, France and Germany.
Even in those countries, expect it mainly where Lyft's partner apps already run. Freenow's Italy list, for example, has Rome and Milan but not Florence or Venice. Outside the US, Canada and those European countries, Lyft does not work. That includes Mexico, the Caribbean, Asia and the Middle East. In Portugal, the Netherlands, Iceland, Czechia and Hungary, Freenow doesn't run either.
How to Use Your US Uber Account Abroad
You don't need a new app or account. Open Uber when you land, and it switches to the local options. A few things work differently:
- Check what "Uber" means there. In Japan, Italy (outside Calabria), Korea, Greece, Ireland, Budapest and Istanbul, the app books taxis or chauffeur cars, not regular drivers. Prices are taxi prices.
- Compare with the official airport taxi. Paris, Rome, Madrid, Athens, Milan and Haneda all have flat taxi fares from the airport (Haneda's excludes tolls and some central wards). They are often equal to or cheaper than Uber, and they don't surge.
- Find the app pickup zone. Many airports send app rides to a parking garage or a signed zone (Heathrow, Hong Kong, Toronto, Montreal, Dubai, Beijing). Request after you have your bags.
- Watch the currency. Uber may offer to charge you in dollars. Our guide to Uber's currency fees abroad explains when to say no.
- Cash is sometimes an option. Uber takes cash in places like Mexico, Dubai, Seoul (pay the taxi in person), London and some Spanish cities (check the app). Uber's Tokyo taxi page lists only cards and PayPal, and in Hong Kong cash works only on Uber Taxi.
- Get the local app as a backup. Grab in Southeast Asia, DiDi in China, GO in Japan, Bolt in much of Europe. Set it up with your card before you fly.
Our Take: What We'd Do Before Flying
Five rules cover most trips.
- In Asia, install the local app at home. Grab for Southeast Asia, DiDi for China, GO for Japan. Add your card before you leave, while you still have good Wi-Fi.
- In Europe, check the flat taxi fare first. Paris, Rome, Madrid, Athens, Milan and Munich all post one. It doesn't surge, and it is often within a few euros of Uber.
- In Mexico, don't plan on a curbside Uber at a beach airport. Book Uber Reserve in Cancún, use the official taxi or a shuttle in Cabo and Tulum, then use Uber freely in town, where it is cheap.
- On islands with no Uber, relax. Aruba, the Bahamas and St. Thomas set taxi rates, so there is nothing to compare. Just confirm the price before you get in.
- Lyft riders, keep Uber as a backup. Lyft's European rollout is brand new and still adding cities through October.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there Uber in Japan?
Yes, but it books taxis. In Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto the Uber app mostly calls licensed taxis or licensed hire cars, so you pay taxi prices. Uber's average from Haneda to Minato in central Tokyo is ¥9,375 (about $59). Haneda's flat-rate taxi, ¥7,600 plus tolls to the Tokyo Station area by day, can be cheaper, but it doesn't cover Minato, Ginza or Shinagawa. GO is a major local taxi app.
Is there Uber in Italy?
Mostly taxis and chauffeur cars. UberX runs only in Calabria, in the far south. In Rome and Milan the app books licensed taxis or pricier licensed chauffeur cars, and in Florence it offers chauffeur cars, not taxis. From Rome's Fiumicino airport, the official flat taxi fare of €55 to anywhere inside the old city walls is usually the better deal.
Is there Uber in Mexico?
Yes, UberX runs in Mexico City, Cancún, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta and Tulum, and it is cheap: Uber's average airport ride in Mexico City is about $11. Airports are the problem. Los Cabos and Tulum do not allow Uber pickups, and Cancún pickups are unreliable, so book Uber Reserve there or take an official taxi or bus.
Is Uber safe in Mexico?
It is one of the options the US government suggests. The State Department rates Mexico Level 2, exercise increased caution, and tells its own staff to use regulated taxi stands or apps like Uber or Cabify instead of waving down street taxis. The US Embassy gives travelers the same advice. Always match the plate with the one in the app.
Is Uber expensive in Europe?
Not really. Uber's own averages put a ride of about 15 minutes at $15 to $29 in cities like Madrid, Paris, Berlin, London and Dublin, about the same as a US ride or a bit more. Florence is pricier ($47) because only Uber Black runs there. Airport rides cost more: about $28 in Madrid, $49 in Paris and $75 in London.
Is there Uber in Paris?
Yes, UberX runs in Paris with licensed private-hire drivers, and the app can also book metered taxis. Uber's average from Charles de Gaulle into Paris is €44 (about $49). The official flat taxi fare is €56 to the Right Bank or €65 to the Left Bank, and it doesn't surge.
Is there Uber in London?
Yes, UberX runs in London, and you can also book black cabs in the app. Uber's average from Heathrow into London is £57 (about $75). At Heathrow, app pickups are in the terminal car parks, not at the curb.
Does Lyft work in Europe?
Starting now. On September 30, 2026, Lyft said North American riders can use their own Lyft app in Europe, beginning with Barcelona and Hamburg and adding London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens and Warsaw during October. The rides come from partner networks; Lyft names drivers on Freenow by Lyft and Gett by Lyft. Lyft does not work in Mexico, the Caribbean or Asia.
Can I use my US Uber account in another country?
Yes. The same app and account work abroad with no new download, and the app switches to the local ride options when you land. Check what those options are: in some countries Uber only books taxis, and some airports send app rides to a separate pickup zone.
Is Uber cheaper abroad than in the US?
For airport rides, often yes. Uber's own past-month averages put 11 of 17 foreign airport rides we checked below the typical US airport-to-downtown ride of $51, led by Mexico ($7 to $24). Tokyo, Rome, London, Munich, Milan and Osaka cost more.
Is there Uber in Aruba or the Bahamas?
No. Uber does not operate in Aruba, the Bahamas or St. Thomas. Taxi fares from the airport are set: in Aruba about $41 to Palm Beach, and in Nassau, for two people, $29 to Cable Beach or $45 to Paradise Island plus a $2 toll.
Is there Uber in Thailand or Singapore?
No. Uber sold its Southeast Asia business to Grab in 2018 and has not returned for rides. Use Grab in Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Bali; in Bangkok, Bolt runs too.
