It is that in every one of the 26, the figure you pay is not the answer the pricing formula produced. It is the minimum fare — a floor that quietly overrides base fare, distance and time on any trip short enough.
Rideshare pricing is usually explained as a rate: so many dollars per mile, so many cents per minute. That framing is accurate for a trip to the airport and actively misleading for a trip across town. Below a certain distance the rate card stops being a rate card and becomes a flat fare, and the distance where that stops being true is remarkably consistent nationwide. A 1-Mile Uber Costs the Minimum Fare — in All 26 Metros
Run a 1-mile trip through every rate card we hold and the result is unanimous: the metered fare loses to the minimum fare 26 times out of 26. The cheapest 1-mile UberX in the set is $5.40 in San Antonio; the most expensive is $8.00 in New York; the median is $6.10.
Uber documents the mechanism plainly. Its rider help article on how a trip price is determined states that in cities that do not offer upfront prices, riders are “charged either a minimum price or a price based on the time and distance for your trip’s route” (Uber Help: How is the price of a trip determined?). Lyft carries the same floor — a minimum fare is a line item on every Lyft rate card in our dataset, in all 26 metros, and Lyft’s own ride pricing and charges article sets out the base-plus-time-plus-distance structure it sits under. Upfront pricing changed how the number is shown to you — one figure before you tap, rather than a meter running in the background — but it did not remove the floor underneath.
Two miles is where that stops being true. A 2-mile UberX runs $6.21 to $10.48, median $7.17, and only one of the 26 metros still bills it at the floor — which is why the second mile of a trip feels so much cheaper than the first. It is the first mile that carries the fixed costs.
So the honest answer to “how much is a 1-mile Uber” is not a rate multiplied by a distance. It is: whatever your city’s minimum fare is. And once you know that, a second question becomes much more interesting than the first — how far can you actually go before the meter starts to matter?
Why a Short Ride Is Not Priced Like a Long One
The formula both apps use is uncontroversial: base fare + (per-mile rate × distance) + (per-minute rate × time) + booking fee, multiplied by surge, then compared against the minimum. Two of those four terms do not move with distance at all. On the US-average card the base fare is $1.50 and the booking fee is $2.20 — $3.70 charged before the car has travelled an inch. The minimum fare on that same card is $6.00, which means the entire variable half of the formula has only $2.30 of room to fill before it starts to count.

The striking result here is not the spread. It is the lack of one. 22 of the 26 metros land between 1.29 and 1.48 miles — a band a fifth of a mile wide — across rate cards whose per-mile rates differ by two thirds, from $1.05 to $1.75. Minimum fares do not look independently set. They look set so that the flat zone lands in roughly the same place everywhere, with the rest of the card left to float on local costs.
The extremes are instructive because they break in opposite directions. Columbus runs longest at 2.19 miles: it pairs the third-highest minimum fare in the set ($7.80) with a below-median per-mile rate ($1.12 against a $1.21 median) and the second-highest booking fee ($3.10). A high floor plus a slow meter is a long flat stretch. New York City runs shortest at 1.04 miles — and it has the highest minimum fare in the country. Its meter is simply fast enough ($2.59 a mile once per-minute charges are folded in at city speed) to clear an $8.00 floor in barely a mile. The most expensive market on the list has the shortest flat-fare zone in the country.

This is why published “Uber costs about $2 a mile” figures feel so wrong the moment you apply one to a trip across town: they are long-trip numbers. Our own per-mile analysis and the Lyft equivalent both describe the asymptote — the number a fare converges toward once the fixed costs are diluted. Nobody actually rides the asymptote across town.
The corollary is the useful bit. Per-mile cost is the wrong metric for a short trip, because you are not really buying miles. You are buying a pickup, and the miles come attached.

Read a row left to right and you get a compact profile of the market: a high minimum with a short dead zone (New York, San Francisco) is an expensive city with a fast meter, and a moderate minimum with a long dead zone (Columbus, Indianapolis) is a cheap city that front-loads its pricing. Comparing the two floors side by side produces a clean sweep: Lyft’s minimum fare is lower than Uber’s in all 26 metros. The median gap is $0.25, running from $0.20 in Phoenix and San Antonio to $0.65 in Columbus.
A quarter is not a reason to keep two apps installed on its own. It is a reason to check both on exactly the trips where it represents a meaningful share of the fare — which is short ones, where $0.25 is around 4% of the bill, rather than airport runs where it rounds to nothing. Requesting UberXL instead of UberX for a 1-mile hop raises your floor by more than half again; Uber Black or Lyft Lux roughly doubles it. On a long trip the premium tiers cost proportionally less than they look, because the higher per-mile rate is what dominates. The Break-Even Seat: When the Minimum Fare Is the Cheapest Ride in Town
Everything above frames the minimum fare as a penalty. There is one condition under which it becomes the best deal in the city, and it follows from a structural difference nobody prices in: transit sells seats, rideshare sells the car. Your Uber minimum does not change when a second, third or fourth person gets in. Four subway fares do.

What to Do Inside the Dead Zone
Six moves that follow directly from the numbers above.
- Stop splitting short trips. Two half-mile rides are two minimum fares. One 1.2-mile ride, in most metros, is still one minimum fare. Chain your errands into a single request and the second stop is very often free — the app supports adding stops mid-trip.
- Walk the short leg, ride the long one. Because the dead zone is measured from pickup, walking four blocks to a pickup point does not save you a cent — you still pay the floor. Walking the whole trip does. Below roughly half a mile, the decision is walk or do not go.
- Count heads before you compare modes. At three or four riders the minimum fare beats a round of transit fares in every metro we checked. Solo, it never does.
- Do not upgrade tiers for a short hop. The tier premium on a 1-mile trip is paid entirely as a higher floor: a median $6.10 becomes $9.50 on XL and $15.00 on Black, for the same mile.
- Check both apps only when the trip is short. Lyft’s lower floor is worth a median $0.25 — a rounding error on a 20-mile ride, roughly 4% on a 1-mile one.
- Expect surge to bite less down here. In the model used throughout this article, surge scales the metered fare while the minimum fare holds as a floor — so a small multiplier on a trip already sitting at the minimum can leave the price unmoved, while the same multiplier on a 10-mile trip lands in full. Method — and what these numbers are not
- The source. Fares are computed from RideWise’s canonical per-metro rate cards — the same base / per-mile / per-minute / booking-fee / minimum-fare records that drive every city and airport page on this site, and that our build verifies against the seed data on every deploy. Fare = max(minimum, base + per-mile × miles + per-minute × minutes + booking fee).
- These are modelled fares, not quotes. Uber and Lyft sell upfront prices set by a demand model we cannot see. The rate card is the floor and the skeleton underneath that price, not a promise about it. Treat every figure here as the no-surge, no-toll, no-tip baseline.
- Drive time is an input, not a measurement. Minutes are modelled at an average 25 mph city speed (2.4 minutes per mile), the same constant the rest of the site uses. Real traffic moves the dead-zone boundary: a slower street pushes the meter past the minimum sooner, so heavy congestion shortens the flat zone.
- Twenty-six metros, not every city. Markets outside these rate cards fall back to a US-average card, and a handful of real markets Uber prices separately (Orange County, for one) do not yet have their own card here. City-level surcharges, airport pickup fees and local rideshare taxes are excluded throughout.
- Transit fares are as published by each agency in August 2026 and are linked in the table above. Agencies change fares on their own schedules — New York moved to $3.00 on 4 January 2026 and Chicago to $2.75 on 1 February 2026 — so check the agency page before relying on a break-even.
