Where to Get Picked Up at SEA

SEA charges a $6.00 rideshare pickup surcharge (set by Port of Seattle, effective October 2024). The fee is the same on both Uber and Lyft, and is automatically included in your fare estimate. Pickup logistics differ by terminal:

Main Terminal

3rd floor of the airport parking garage (follow signs from baggage claim, ~5 min walk)

SEA consolidates all rideshare in the parking garage; no curbside pickup is permitted.

When Surge Hits Hardest at SEA

Peak Surge Windows

Evening international and West Coast business arrivals (5:30 PM – 9:00 PM) push surge above 1.5x. Friday afternoons are the worst departure window because Highway 99 backs up.

Best Low-Surge Window

Tuesday through Thursday mid-mornings (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM) produce the lowest SEA surge. Late evenings after 11:00 PM are also low-surge but driver supply thins quickly.

Cheaper Alternatives to Rideshare at SEA

Link Light Rail runs from SEA directly to Downtown Seattle and the University District every 6-15 minutes for $3.00 — a $25-40 savings vs. rideshare. The light rail station is connected to the terminal by a covered walkway. Taxi flat rate from SEA to Downtown Seattle is $40-50.

Recent Fee & Operational Changes at SEA

The Port of Seattle raised the rideshare pickup fee from $5.00 to $6.00 in October 2024, the second increase since the original $2.50 fee. The Port is also studying a "congestion surcharge" that would charge an additional $2-3 during peak hours.

SEA Pricing: Our Analysis

Computed from Uber's published Seattle rates plus the $6.00 pickup fee, a typical SEA-to-Downtown Seattle UberX trip lands around $34.20 — closer to $46.80 with weekday evening surge, and nearer $27.40 on a weekend midday. Link Light Rail's $3 fare is 91% cheaper than the typical rideshare fare — the largest transit-vs-rideshare savings ratio of any major US airport we cover.

Local Take: Rideshare at SEA

“SEA is the rare US airport where the light rail is so good that skipping rideshare for downtown trips is the honest recommendation. The Link costs $3, runs every 6 minutes during the day, and the station is right there. The walk from baggage claim to the rideshare pickup in the parking garage takes about 7 minutes — by the time you walk there, ride a Link train, and get to your downtown hotel, it is a wash on time but a 90% savings on cost. For Bellevue or Eastside trips, rideshare wins because Link does not reach Bellevue yet. The 2024 fee hike to $6 made the math even worse for rideshare — if you are choosing between $35 Uber and $3 Link, take the train.”

Service Tier Prices at SEA

Both Uber and Lyft offer multiple ride tiers from SEA. The table below estimates each tier’s price for a typical 12-mile downtown trip from SEA, based on our rate-card data. Tier multipliers come from Uber’s published fare pages and Lyft’s pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the rideshare pickup at Sea-Tac?
On the 3rd floor of the parking garage — not at the terminal curb. From baggage claim, cross the skybridge into the garage and follow signs to the app-based ride zones. Give yourself a few extra minutes; the walk is longer than at most airports.
Should I take Link light rail or an Uber into Seattle?
Link light rail runs from SeaTac/Airport Station to downtown Seattle in about 40 minutes for around $3, immune to I-5 traffic. It is the value pick for solo travelers. Rideshare is faster door-to-door off-peak and far more practical for a group with bags or destinations off the rail line.
How unpredictable is the drive from SEA to downtown?
Very — I-5 congestion can double the trip, especially on weekday afternoons. Because part of the fare is time-based, a crawl up I-5 costs more than the same miles at night. Check the live estimate before deciding between rideshare and the light rail.
Does Seattle rain drive up Uber prices at the airport?
Heavy rain reliably bumps ride demand, and Sea-Tac surges when downpours coincide with arrival banks. The light rail does not care about weather, which makes it a useful pressure valve when app prices look inflated.
Can I Uber from Sea-Tac to Bellevue or Tacoma?
Both are common runs. Bellevue means crossing Lake Washington, and if your driver routes over the tolled SR 520 bridge, that charge lands in your fare. Tacoma is a longer straight shot south on I-5. Compare the current estimates for each route above.
Are cabs at SEA worth it over rideshare?
Taxi pricing at Sea-Tac does not surge, so cabs become attractive exactly when the apps spike — storms, holiday weekends, late-night arrival waves. The rest of the time, Uber and Lyft quotes usually come in under the cab fare.
